Kimball Pines County Park

Location - off of Michigan Avenue, behind the Calhoun County Medical Care Facility in Emmett Township.

Park Sign
Planted in the 1930's and 1940's, Kimball Pines County Park is 100 acres of mostly plantation pines.  Plantation pines are trees that have been planted closely in rows that run both north/south and east/west with the intention that some trees will be removed.  Kimball Pines is one of the oldest stands of urban pines in Michigan.  The park also contains deciduous woodlands, ponds and a creek that is a tributary of the Kalamazoo River.

Woodlands are one of Calhoun County's most valuable natural resources.  These wooded areas provide ground cover which continues to aid in maintaining water tables and retarding erosion.  They also influence the micro climate by acting as natural air conditioners and provide visual screens, wind protection and physical barriers for the community.

Kimball Pines park is comprised of red, scotch, jack and white pines as well as black cherry trees and numerous other species of trees.  Formerly known as Kimball Sanitarium, Kimball Pines was purchased in the 1960's and became part of the Calhoun County park system.
